columbo S3 E9, "all in good time"
oh, just one more thing sir, and then i'll be out of your hair. there’s just still something about this case that’s bothering me. you said that at the time of the murder, you were at home, is that correct sir? and you said you had just sat down in a big comfy green chair next to your fireplace, wearing a night shirt and a little red night cap with a puff ball at end, is that right sir? and you were drinking – let me check my notes here – you were drinking Sleepytime Tea, and you said the valerian root in the Sleepytime caused you to get so drowsy, that you were asleep right in your chair at the time of the murder, is that how you remember it, sir? see, that’s what i just can’t seem to figure out. the police only found one box of tea in your cupboard, that box of Sleepytime Tea, you’re sure it was Sleepytime Tea you were drinking on the night of the murder? well sir, then you’re story is impossible. do you want to know how i know it’s impossible, sir? you see, my wife drinks Sleepytime Tea every night, fantastic product, she loves the subtle aromatic blend of chamomile, lemongrass, and mint. loves it. now, i don’t drink the stuff myself – you see i’m not much of a tea drinker, i prefer a cup of coffee over any cup of tea – but sometimes i pick up a box for my wife on my way home from work. and that’s how i know you’re lying, sir. you couldn’t have fallen asleep from the valerian root in the Sleepytime, because Sleepytime doesn’t have any valerian root in it. only Sleepytime Extra contains valerian root. so you see, it just doesn’t add up sir.
