the grocery store

if benny could go his entire life without eating, he would be content to do so, or perhaps not do so, in this case. but as it were, he did have to consume food to continue living, and that necessity is why he found himself in the supermarket every monday night after work.

the front left wheel on this evening’s shopping cart appeared to be autonomous, independently intelligent, and perhaps even malicious, as he fought to keep the cart moving in a straight line down the frozen foods isle. as he scanned the glass cases for frozen pizzas, his mind couldn’t help wander back to the frustrating day he endured at work.

among a number of professional slights, there had been the hasty and entirely unnecessary meeting his boss had arranged about ten minutes after said boss arrived at work. granted, his boss had moseyed in an hour and a half late, so it wasn’t such an early meeting that benny hadn’t gotten a cup of coffee in beforehand. just as well, since he doubted he would have made it through that meeting sans-caffeine without saying at least one sarcastic comment he would later regret.

he didn’t like to fixate on work grievances, especially while trying to decode the redesigned packages on the frozen meals for one.

also, he was beginning to find it peculiar that everyone in the store was a dog except for him.
